I have a very earlt serial numbered 1978 Z1R, under #200. I have posted a picture of the steering lock. Is this the normal location? A friend mentioned it was in an odd place. Did they use a different triple tree on earlier models?

thats normal location for z1/kz through 1978 anyway,not sure about z1r.
are those extra bolt holes for fairing mounts?

that thing has had some mods done to it.i know my 1980 z1r has the lock in the side of the neck.i will have to try and remember to check my 78 this weekend.those welded on tabs on the bottom are not factory.it looks like someone has modded another tree to work on a z1r.

The steering lock on my mine is on the side of the steering stem. It may be that the really early Z1-Rs used the standard frame and needed to use the old triple trees as well to keep the lock. Can you confirm that it is indeed a Z1-R frame number?

My serial number is around 1400 and this is what the steering lock looks like;

Thats where the lock is on my 77 1000. Maybe the early Z1Rs had the same setup.
