kz440 fork swap
30 Sep 2010 06:15
My buddy just bought a 1981 KZ440 (standard chassis), and the front end looks twisted up a bit. In case he needs to replace the forks, will the forks from a KZ440 LTD be the same fit? and will the fender swap over as well? Thanks in advance!

For conventional style forks you can just see if the fork tubes (the chrome part) have the same diameter. An easy way to check that is to look up the part numbers for the seals. If the seals/tube diameters are different then you need to look into adapting the triple clamps.
You can also look to see if either bike utilizes the same top or bottom clamp or fork tubes on the Kawasaki site.
On the other hand, a twisted up front end can usually be fixed by removing the wheel and loosening the triple clamp pinch bolts, then reassembling everything.

Thanks.
I'm pretty sure all KZ400/440 upper fork tubes are the same diameter, but I wasn't sure about the lengths. I don't know if the LTD forks are longer because of rake differences between models. The forks on my buddy's bike need to be rebuilt, and there's quite a bit of rust on them, though the travel areas look ok. I was thinking that replacing the forks would save a lot of time and effort.
I guess my question now would be which forks are compatible with this model. I'm pretty sure it's a KZ440-B2. Has anybody tried using LTD forks and hiking them up in the trees?
