Saddlebag guards

26 Sep 2010 20:37

I have been looking for saddlebag guards for my 79 650 sr. I have not had any luck. Is anyone familiar with what I need to put some new saddlebags on my bike?

I know some of you are going to say not to do it... but if I can fit some milk and bread and stuff on my bike I get to ride more. That's a good enough reason for me to put em on. Thanks for any info you have in advance.

What about a tank-bag?
Most of them have a zipper that allows you to expand it higher
I have a "Teknic" tank-bag and I love it,fits everything I need.
Has magnets in the flaps and it locks to the tank and will NOT slide around, but simple to take off.

For example...

Several companies make really good soft saddlebags that are a universal fit and easily removable. If you really prefer hard bags, you might take a look at Givi or keep an eye on fleabay and cl for old Vetter, etc, bags from back in the day. If you go that way, be very careful that you get all the mounting hardware and keep in mind that 30 or 40 year old fiberglass and plastic can be VERY brittle.

If you have access to a welder you can build your own for a reasonable price. If not scour ebay till something pops up.

What is a saddlebag guard?

Is that something like a mounting bracket?

I have a small set of saddlebag guards.chrome and in perfect shape.dont know if they are for a 650 or nor but they are small enough to be.wanna try em? Patton, they are a set of "u" shaped brackets that mount to the rear fender or frame to keep the bags from flapping around and getting caught in the rear wheel.bj

I do have access to an old friend that happens to teach welding and I know he could fabricate something if I gave him some prints. Think there are any prints available for something like that?

The ones I have seen are really very simple. I have a friend that rode from Florida to Sturgis and he made a set out of large pencil rod welded to small sections of pipe. The pipe was for mounting to a stud or post. He was using duffle bags instead of traditional saddle bags.

Hi hocbj23,

I'm new to the forum, and to motorcycles in general. Just got my first bike: a 1984 KZ550 LTD yesterday. I'm looking for some saddlebags for it and saw your post. Do you think your guards would fit a 550?

Thanks,
quant_rider
