77 C1 getting rid of rim lock wheels
15 Sep 2010 11:42
Ok, so I have been looking around a bit as I have grown tired of fixing tube tires. Can anyone offer any experiences with swapping the rear wheel to a latter model that doesn't have the rim locks and require a tube tire?
Thanks!

Welcome to KZR. Any tube tire will need rim locks. Now you can switch to a tube less wheel.

Right! The rim locks keep the wheel from spinning inside the tire which then shears the valve stem off the tube (because the tube doesn't spin with the wheel.) Take it from one who had it happen in heavy Baltimore traffic at about 45 mph - the air ALL escapes in one POOOOF and it's time to hang on for dear life while the butthead 3 feet behind you blows his horn thinking you are intentionally doing some kind of weird stunts. This was on my BSA many moons ago. If you use tubes use the locks; tubeless wheels don't need the locks. Ed
