Was having trouble loosening front axle nuts. Tried to loosen them before loosening bottom clamp nuts, but would not budge. Tried loosening clamp nuts, and then was successful in loosening the big nuts. Don't know if that was just coincidence or not. Anyone?

so it hasnt had a tire change in 31 years?I bet that tire is in great shape.Lol.try generous applications of PBBlaster for several days, them wipe off and apply a little heat to the nut while avoiding the axle if possible.this may work.ps :archimedes said give him a long enough lever and he could move the world.bj

Thanks reply. Edited my post since you replied. Was able to break it loose, but still don't know if procedure was coincidence. Tire is not too bad, since bike only has ~8500 miles, and always in garage for past 31 years.

You must loosen the axle clamps first as they tighten directly on the axle collars (the "nuts" you refer to). I very strongly recommend you buy a Kawasaki factory service manual. They are available on eBay; be sure to get the one for your specific model/year. Working on these bikes without one can be not only frustrating but can lead to dangerous mistakes. No one has ever regretted buying one as they describe each system, all the maintenance and repairs, torque specs (you're going to need these and a torque wrench or 2 to to safely reinstall the front wheel), and tons of other extremely useful information. Good luck with your bike. Ed

Yes, thanks. After loosening the clamp nuts, the big axle nuts turned easily. I went back and reread the manual regarding this process, paid attention to what I had read this time, and did it correctly. It was easy to understand how the clamps fit directly on the collar after I had it disassembled and was able to see it. Ready, fire, aim......
