Making a ELR

I have a chance to buy a 1982 GPZ1100. I want to make a ELR out of this bike. My question is the large dash that is currently on the bike, did the original ELR have such a big dash under the fairing? Or did the ELR's come with the smaller round gauges like the KZ1000J bike?

Here's a photo of the instruments on my 1984 1100R, the 83 1000R has the same instruments. Are the GPZ's like this?

To summarize the previous posters...

the KZ1000R1 and KZ1000S1 (aka 1982 ELR and 1982 factory racer) had the individual J-style instruments.

the KZ1000R2 and KZ1100R1 (aka 1983 ELR and 1984 ELR) had the large pod-style instrument like the 1982 GPz1100

So, to answer your question, if you paint your 1982 GPz1100 like a 1983 ELR, you'll approximate an ELR.

See www.kz1000r.com for all the options and clones :)

That is a 1981 GPz1100. It is difficult to get the small 1/4 fairing to mount as the pod is too big. The bike originally came without the fairing and a Kawasaki aftermarket fairing looks considerably different from the ELR style fairing.

This is taken from our picture gallery on KZR. Note the fairing and its' differences.

I am going to start looking for an ELR fairing. I will most likely remove the large pod and either go with the round KZ1000J style gauges or hold out and maybe get lucky and find the actual ELR gauge pod.

Remember, the fairings from a 1982 KZ750R1 (GPz750), KZ1100B2 (GPz1100), KZ1000R1/R2 (ELR), and the KZ1100R1 (1100 ELR) will all work...but beware, if the eBay ad says ELR, then the bidding can get stupid. The fairing and windscreen are still available as aftermarket. HOWEVER, the rubber gasket between the windscreen and fairing is NLA. When you bid on/buy a fairing, make sure that the fairing mounts that attach to the upper fork brackets come with the fairing as these are also NLA and difficult to locate...and speaking of brackets, the upper fork brackets are also NLA and difficult to locate.

The 1982 GPz instrument pods occasionally pop up on eBay...but I'd don't know how easily they swap for the 1981 pod. Again, if you bid on any instrument that says ELR in the description, it can become silly bidding season, quickly. J model instruments should work but there aren't many being parted out. It is possible that either contemporary K or M model instruments might work.
