Changing the tires should be easy, and you can look at your brakes, etc then. Buy new tubes if needed and do a "Static" balance.
Here is one ebay seller that I have used.

EDIT: you should put your bike info in your signature so everybody knows. It'll help HEAP's

I also buy all of my tires on line. I run nothing but Avon tires (Made in UK) and have been doing so since 1979. I have found that they give the best performance and life for the $ you spend. I have also changed my own tires in the past, but find that paying $25 to have it changed is much more "convenient". Since I have no idea as in which bike we are talking about, I have no idea as for if your wheel is tubed or tubeless. If you have a tubed wheel you will also require a new tube and strip protector. If your tire is tubed you will have to deal with the rim locks on the back wheel. Either they must be replaced or the holes they mount in must be blocked off.

I personally don't like wrestling with tires, so I'm more than happy to pay the extra cha-ching to have them mounted and balanced (or better yet, make friends with someone who's got a tire machine like the circuit racer down the street from me B) ). Do yourself a favor though and don't take your entire bike to the dealer or where ever you are going to get your tires done at. They'll charge you a TON of money to pull the wheels off the bike.

YES YES YES Definitely remove the wheel from the bike to go have the tire changed. That is where most of your money would go at a motorcycle shop.

I just put two new tires on my 550. I took both wheels off myself, brought them to my dealer and had them mount and balance. they charged me at a rate of $84/hour. and my total bill was $46.79. so. in my opinion. it was well worth it. Now i know they are balanced and that it was done right.

Our local bike shop charges a flat $20 to mount and spin balance any tire which is on par with that figure.

Thanks for all your input guys. I am shopping tonight for a tire. I did inspect the front tire and it appears to be brand new, no cracks and no visible wear. I think the guy I bought it from must have realized how bad it was and changed it.
