Stock is best. All aftermarket trash is just that. Oops, I can't say all I suppose, but will say all aftermarket seats are trash. Guys on the gold wing newsgroups hash this over and over and spend $1000 on a seat that is less comfortable than stock and has the wonderful side effect of the cheap vinyl tearing to shreds in a couple years or less. KZ no different. By stock I mean the stock KZ1000A seat. If you have the LTD I can't comment.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

If its the original 32 year old foam in the seat, you'll be a victim of severe monkey-butt after a couple of hours. The stock seat on my 77' is fookin' horrendous!

You can also get a custom seat from corbin and some other places.

I'd like to see what can be used for home made types as my stock ex500 seat gives about 70 mostly pain free miles. Also, my kz650 seat is good for about 10 pain free miles. Looking to improve that number quite a bit.

Corbin seats are hard at first but with time in the saddle soften a little...

As for what's the most comfortable... Truly no real answer for that for too many variables... Body build, leg inseam lengths, thick thighs, bad back, riding styles, fat ass etc...

In my mod, I modded my rear set locations for me and I have frog butt (no ass) so Corbin works well for me even with a couple hours in the seat....

What works for me may not be right for you...

Regardless of the seat design, GEL seat pads are another option. ;) I've seen air pads now days as well, not sure how well they hold up...

It does not bolt right on. The cop seat that I have is supposed to mount at the front with a hinge, and at the rear it has two skinny hsocks that are roughly 10" long. Of course the stock seat has two side hinges.

In that picture, I made brackets that mounted to where the skinny shocks mounted and attached to the upper shock mounts on the bike. It is not ideal, since I had to suspend the rear of the bike up and unbolt the shocks to get the brackets on. This would not allow any kind of roadside access to the battery. The front mounting points for the hinge are stripped out.

I have since pulled the cover and foam off of the seat so I can work with the plain pan. I am going to use a hinge to attach it to the gastank bolt and then some kind of quick release for the rear so that the seat will fold forward if need be. I have some large hinges to try to make something out of. Then maybe rubber bump stops of some kind at the rear for the frame contact and a bracket with a hitch pin.

I also plan to narrow the pan slightly. Here is a pic of the naken pan sitting on the frame.
