Leaky gas cap?

Well, this didn't take long...lol...

1980 750 LTD. Just went out to the parking lot and it was seeping gas down the side of the tank. i washed it all off. I even took the gas cap off to dry all the gas off. I figured it was leaking from the orings around the screws that hold the cap on. I did just gas up this morning, but I did not overfill it. So, I decided I would put it on the center stand to try and keep the gas from coming out from the screws. When I did this, gas was seeping out of the damn key hole!!!

Anyone have any ideas on this one? I was thinking of getting a new gasket for the cap and orings for the screws, but what do I do to keep it from coming through the key hole?

Fuel in the ground is much colder than when it is your tank. It probably expanded enough to cause it to end up over full. The key hole is basically the vent, don't know about your screw gaskets, I've seen a leak there.

Correct on the fuel expansion I believe.

When you fill, try not adding much more fuel than the small fill bump on the tank spine, this way after expanding, it will still be plenty low enough to prevent overflow.

On the good side, you deffinately don't have a tank ventilation issue :P

This is true. Any spiders/dirt/whatever that may have been in the vent sure aren't happy.

I definitely put more than what you recommended in. Lesson learned.
