1980 750 LTD frame # doesn't match motor
26 Jul 2010 11:25
So I was looking at my frame number for insurance purposes and I noticed that the frame and engine number do not match. I am 90% sure this is the original motor in the bike...
Is this normal?

I believe that it's almost imposible to get exact matching of engine and frame numbers. Possibly being within a few thousand # would be close.
For example, on my 82 GPz1100 B2 the frame # starts out at JKAKZBB11CA0***** and the engine is KZT10BE0*****

On cars when they say "numbers match" they really mean the engine, tranny, etc. is within the correct range for the body number. So for example a 327 Chevy engine from a later model car may not be the "correct" engine for an earlier model Chevy that came with a 327 because the later engine may have minor internal differences even though it's the same displacement.
It's a different story with firearms by the way. Matching serial numbers mean just that - exact match for every part on the gun. Ed
