Whine from rear with new chain & sprockets

Hi all,

I just changed the chain & sprockets on my '95 KZ1000P with original size parts and now I'm getting a whine from rear at speeds above 45mph. Applying the brake doesn't change noise. I'm concerned that maybe I tightened rear axle nut too tight. (no torque wrench, just tightened it to about 80-90 ft. lbs. by feel)

Or is this normal until new chain breaks in?

Thanks!

Check that you have adjusted the tension correctly. Maybe the spacer between the cush drive and wheel(inside the cush drive) fell out while you had things apart ?

New chains dont make break-in noise.

Are the rear wheel bearings good? Original ones? www.goallballs.com has replacement bearings.

I have never used a torque wrench in my life on chain adjusting. Are you sure the sprockets are aligned properly to each other. If not, the chain will definitely wine against the rear sprocket.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Bearings are good- only 10K miles. Spacers are in place. I'll check chain tension again as well as alignment.

Outside of alignment and chain slack clearance to spec.... You have applied chain lube right?
