530 chain convrsion

I just did a chain conversion to 530. I have a 33R and a 15F witha 110 chain. I dropped about 700 RPM's on the highway. I was running 4500 at 60 now I'm running around 3800. I was told this might not be good for my engine because its used to running higher RPM's to be more efficient. Is this true?:blink:

did you want to go with a higher gear ratio?to get your stock 630 gearing you would need to increase the sizes of your front and rear sprockets.

Is this for your 1000? I have on order a gear ratio change to DROP my hi-way RPM, you have to shift back to fourth if the engine starts to lug, just like anything else. Other wise for more or less flat cruising, enjoy the increased fuel economy, the less wear and tear on the motor and the quieter ride.

I agree motorhead. I did it for the cruising ability and the mileage. And the only thing it really affected was my take off in first gear.

NO! Your engine will appreciate it. I changed the gearing on my 750 to drop the RPMs at 60 mph by about 700 and ran it that way for 25 years. The acceleration was still adequate and the cruising was more comfortable. Most of these bikes are geared too low to get 1/4 mile times they can brag about.

The only time it might be a bad idea is for people who ride a passenger a lot or if the person is way overweight and the bike would be straining too much on acceleration. Normal use, no worries.

We covered this topic a couple of weeks ago here. depending on the 1000 engine you have it can be detrimental. You can take the engine completely out of the torque and fuel consumption curves and actually loose fuel efficiency. I did it to my bike because I did quite a bit of modifying to the engine and shifted all of my performance curves. If you Have a "J" series engine this can be a problem on a stock engine because of the existing gear ratios in the transmission. First gear can be a real bitch for start-ups. If you have a early engine it is not that bad. Take a look at the curves in your factory service manual and make the determination from the curves. Take a look at page 25 of this post. This is what I did.

This is a 78 police bike. It will still smoke the tire in first gear and I gained the low RPM's on the highway so I guess I got the best of both worlds. Thanks:)
