Removal of Handlebar Grip??? was created by mind2find
Hi all,

I need to get the left handlebar clutch assembly off the handlebars of a parts bike to put on my own. Unfortunately, it apparently only _slides_ off of the handle-bar, which means I need to safely (without damaging it) take the handle-bar grip off of both bikes and reinstall them once the assembly is swapped.

So how can this be done without destroying the grip? I assume it's glued or something? I can get the control module right next to the grip off with a screwdriver. Is there some way I can lubricate this thing off? WD-40 or penetrating oil? Is there a trick?

THANKS! I'm going on a trip in 2 days and would love to have this in place for it.

Cheers,

-sf

Some folks have had luck w WD-40 & other sprays. Another way is to kinda separate the grip from the handlebar a little, then shoot compressed air in there. I tried a bunch of different ways, but had to cut the grip a little to get it off.

Then when your ready to re-install grip, get your wifes hair spray. Works great and even better if it's super extra hold! ;)

Compressed air! It's the wave of the future. If you grip the grip right and blow air in to it she comes off like... well anyway that is the way it works. AND I used to use hairspray on my BMX bikes because my grips used to slip around too much. Not good if you are doing a crazy trick and your grip happens to slip off and well...I digress. Hairspray=great.

I prefer grip adhesive. Hairspray is water soluble, so I don't trust it. :)

Same here. Grip adhesive is sold at all motorcycle shops. Ed

Actually, it's something like urethane or lacquer. Only comes off with acetone. Get it on your hands and you'll see.

That may be good for some types of grips that are more stretchy, but the grips I have on my bike now I guarantee don't need it and are solid and have been for 2-3 seasons now. I had to use compressed air to get them off. Some grips slip really easy. I guess you would have to see if they slip then for sure put something on them but if water from a rainstorm gets in for sure they will slip so yeah if you have those types of grips then you would need something extra but my octagonal grips have been through so many rainstorms and I don't even have hairspray on them. I know my stock grips had some kind of adhesive. You almost have to cut them off to get them off.

I've had some luck using the wife's hairdryer and getting them toasty warm and then slowly twisting them off. I don't think that would work on the foam type grips however.
