Hand Grips

Looking for a replacement hand grip for my 80 Z1r. Anyone recommend a decent grip-I am not a fan of the foam grips-also are both sides the same size-Thanks

I like the Oury grips also but I would say order them from Jeff at Z1.

Pugs

Foam grips are crap, they harden and get slick. Ourys are OK but wear like an old tire. The stock grips are by far the best. They were still available last I looked, but many years ago. Don't expect to buy a Chinese hand grip touted as the Holy Grail and have it work any better than stock. Part of the appeal of aftermarket crap grips is they are "soft", "large diameter", any of a number of bogus ideas, but in the long run they stink compared to stock. My Dad did those foams on an old Goldwing, gads what junk. And to answer the question about both sides being the same, no they aren't. Stock Kawasaki comes with the complete throttle tube as part of the right grip. It's simply a plug and play. Buy aftermarket and the right "should be" bigger inner diameter than the left to accomodate the tube. I wouldn't bet on this in this day and age though, they may expect you to put a 3/4" diameter grip over a 1" tube or vise versa. Got to love modern aftermarket. :X You then have to pry your old grip off the tube. Also many aftermarket grips are too short so you have to either hacksaw off part of your tube or put up with a 1/2" ugly gaping gap. Then for sure whatever glue you use will not work and the grip will rotate all goofy on the tube. Needless to expand any further in this boredom, but if you have stock grips, keep them, if not get them.

Be sure if you get the Oury to inquire on the date stamp. You can't use them if they are over 2 yrs old as rubber is no longer safe after that long. Also replace when tread wears to 2/32" regardless of age.

How often do you have to rotate them?

I have a 1980 kz1000 mark2 chain drive bike that I am doing a frame off restoration on

If you're doing a restoration definitely go with stock; anything else will stick out like a sore thumb. Ed

On and off in seconds using compressed air rubber cone tip between edge of grip and handlebar, and no glue or hairspray needed.

Have not hardened, but bike is garaged.

5" length is 1/8" shorter than oem KZ900-B1 LTD.
