82 seat lock on 81 KZ550

Please bear with me as I am a noob. I bought a 81 KZ550 over the weekend that does not have a seat lock. I see one on ebay from an 82 KZ550. Would this work? If this is the wrong place to ask please move. I know I will need to get a key for it, which I will see if a locksmith can do local or order from Kawasaki. Thanks guys.

You're in the right section - Chassis.
A bunch of bikes use the same seat lock as your 550, including the 82 model. You can cross-reference stuff at Kawasaki.com. When you get a replacement, it may have a 4-digit number on it for cutting a new key. One option for a new key is to get an Ilco blank from a hardware store; I'm currently using an Ilco KA/14 X/103.

Please tell me a little more on the ilco blank. Is there a specific type that would work? I must be missing what you are saying, because it is a scary thought to think a blank key could fit and make it turn...

Sorry for the ambiguity. Buy a blank, then have it cut.
The ilco KA 14 . X 103 is a specific blank - that's why I provided the numbers.
Ilco has an on-line catalogue.
I bought a blank at HomeDepot, then they cut it using a spare key. In your case if the seat lock doesn't come w a key, you may have to go to a locksmith or the Kaw dealer.

hey i have a seat latch off a 81 550 i would sell ya in working condiition. i would just have to get a key made for it and what not i have the key but i need it fo rmy igniton so ill get it copied if ure intrested
