Needed steering head bearing races was created by mjg15

I bought a nice KZ1000P front end a couple yrs ago
and I'm just getting around to fitting it on my '81 GPz550 frame. It has a good set of rollers attached, but I don't have the outer races to install into the frame (the 550's come with loose balls).

Does anybody have a decent set that they would be interested in parting with ?

is the steering head I.D the same on both bikes for the races to fit?

Good question !! . Judging by the relative size of the tapered rollers I'm hoping so. The 550 frame is approx 48mm for the top and approx 52mm for the bottom.

z1 lists bearings for an 82j as 25x47x15 for top bearing,lower bearing is a 28x52x16.5

82 55 is listed as 30x48x14 for top bearing,lower bearing is 30x52x17.
O.D of lower race looks pretty close but top race of the 550 looks to be a little bigger

Still recovering,some days are better than others.

Look like I'm not just dropping in a set of races, but they are relatively close so hopefully I can find something that works easily enough. I'll check with the bearing supply companies.

no problem.if you can get the I.D of the steering head and the O.D of steering stem a decent bearing place should be able to match something up

Look right? lower is a 16 VS 16.5. I assuming that that uis the height ? If so .5mm smaller should be OK ?

I'll try local in the AM and see if they are reasonable and available...if not then Z1 or Ebay will work

i wounder if you could take .5 mm off the cup on bottem of steering head,or if it would even matter?

That wouldn't be the only grinding that gets done on this project...thats for sure. It's going to have parts from quite a few bikes. So far stuff from GPz550 (81 &82),KZ550, ZR550, KZ1000P, KZ1300 is intended to be used, plus aftermarket shocks and swingarm.
