Where to Get Smaller Rear Sprockets?
06 May 2010 17:33
My 1979 KZ750 twin runs the 38 tooth rear sprocket and I would like t get a 36 or maybe 35 tooth rear. I recall there are place to get aluminum rears (from Sprocket Specialties?) but I think they run like $90 or so. I saw the stock steel ones for maybe $25 at Z1.
Anyplace to get smaller sized steel sprockets for the rear?

There are two different hub sizes used on these Kawasakis. Z1E has both sizes in the 630 chain and the standard one in the 530. Bike bandit also has a very good selection but their web sight is very hard to use when it comes to sprocket selection and they are more expensive than Z1E unless you want to go threw all the "price Match" "best price guarantee" BS process.

It's stock 530 chain. I know where to get the stock rear sprockets and many places sell LARGER rear sprockets, I just wish somebody sold reasonably priced SMALLER rear sprockets which is what I am looking for.
I can get one from Sprocket Specialists but it runs about $100 delivered.

That is impossible. A rer sprocket should not cost more than about $25 at Z1E. I just bought one not too long ago. What is the hole size in the center of the sprocket. It should be 80mm. If it is than a 38T 6Bolt pattern is the SMALLEST made by anyone. Your only choice is to get a larger front countershaft sprocket. One tooth on the front approximates 3 teeth in the back.

Yeah, stock 38T rears are $25. I want a 35. I already went up one gear on the front to 17T and nothing larger will fit on in the front. That is impossible. Maybe possible for a 530 chain but I looked long and hard for a 35T steel #630 and couldn't find one. Ended up purchasing a 35T aluminum from Sprocket Specialist. Works great. Much better ratio than the stock 42T. Bike is an 82 GS1100E.

I have run a couple of al sprockets, they are suprisingly durable. The two I have run outlasted the chains both times (more than 15k miles).
