73 Z1 steering head frame brace crack was created by mtkawboy
I was looking over my 77 1000 powered 73 Z1 yesterday & found a crack. Its about about 2 inches long in the right side brace that ties the steering head to the frame & goes from the outside edge then disappears under the frame tube. Someone bolted a brace across the frame down tubes to support them. Apparently it is common from wheelies on the early Z1s. Id like to weld it up,anyone see any problems doing this or special care I need to take doing it outside of removing the battery cables ? Im going to take it to a pro & have it done, any special type of welding that would be best ?

Shouldnt be any problem for any fairly decent welder, nothing special.

i'd strip the bike and get the frame checked to see if it was still straight , then i'd have it welded up in a frame jig

I live in Billings Mt, theres no one that can do that around here, this aint California. Its just a hairline crack, not a big one. With my bad back and all the bikes I have it will hardly get ridden anyway. Ill look for someone but I doubt Ill have much luck. I would prefer to do it that way.

Just take it to a welding shop, and ask him if he could do a quick burn with a MIG.

It would take him 30 seconds, and I wouldn't even take anything apart (depending how close wires are). And I bet he'd charge you $30. Or try anyone with a MIG at home, which is the most common home welder. Start asking around your friends, and bring a case of beer with you. Everyone know at least one person with a MIG.

If your thinking your noting going to ride it much and want to get rid of it, sell it without fixing it so it's someone else's problem. They may want to fix it another way. (Of course tell them about it though).
