Rear Brake Problems

I have a 1975 Z1 and I'm having issues with the stock rear brake. On occasion when applying the rear brake there is a "klunk" noise and the pedal goes mushy and then firm again. So in order it's apply pedal and there is normal resistance, then the noise and the pedal gets soft but more pressure makes it firm again. Problem is that when it gets that second grip sometimes it locks up the rear wheel. Any ideas?

Oh and I don't need any "who uses the rear break?" comments.

That single disk ain't enough for all that motor. IMHO.

Side note I just got a new 2010 Concours 1400. Nothing like a new Kow in the barn.
98% of all Harleys ever sold are still on the road. The other 2% made it home.

I'm not sure, but it could be a loose torque rod or the shoes. It would be a good time to drop the rear wheel and check things.

Rear drum brake?
The glue that binds the lining to the shoes can fail over time.... the lining comes off & gets jammed between the shoe & drum.
