Front Fork Tube springs 1975 Z1 900
25 Apr 2010 07:47
Good Morning
I dissambled the front forks yesterday on my 1975 Kawasaki Z1 900, I noticed that one end of the inner fork springs that fit inside the tubes was compressed for about 6-8", in order words the coils are actually touching on one end of the springs..
I assume that is by design, however I am unsure if this compressed portion of the spring should be on the upper or lower end of fork tubes??
Hope this makes sense.
Could use some input on this please.

In reality this makes no difference. This is what is known as a dual rate spring. Supposedly if you place the more dense section to the top there will be less fork noise. I have never been able to tell the difference. I always place mine with the more dense section to the bottom. The denser the section is the quicker it reacts (the softer it is everything els being equal). This being said this means that the denser section moves more frequently. Since this being a fact, i want to keep this section in oil at all times, the upper section (less dense) of the spring being dry.

Otto may be correct, just as long as you do the same orientation for both forks. I thought I had read a recommendation some time ago and I have looked through all my Kawasaki manuals and it just doesn't specify

while your in there u could add a 2" spacer made of ABS( or what ever u can find), to the top of the spring.
This will help decrease front end dive and firm it up a bit. if u dont like the feel just remove them, no harm done.
