If you can do it yourself, yes. But a decent chain and sprockets will run you over $100, and its at least an hours work for someone.

if you dont want to do it yourself, 200 bucks parts and labor is a decent price if its an o ring chain and quality sprockets.......

Z1 Enterprises definitely has the best prices on X Ring chain and sprockets. Very good quality. My guess is it will run about $100 - $120 for chain and sprockets.

Pending what your going after in pitch, o-ring selection, length, color, material of sprockets etc... $200 may be a fair price considering installed as well...

Now before everyone get's all riled up, I'd rather accomplish myself as well due to knowing what is what, noticing other issues, insure done correctly etc...

Prices minus shipping costs...

Chain $90-$130
Front Sprocket: $35 +
Rear Sprocket: $35 +

Not hard to see where $200 is easily reached...

Truly your call....

I just had a 15/41 setup with 630-96 chain installed on my KZ1000. Cost me about 190 for parts and 75 for labor.
Basically the parts cost what previous post described , and were actually less than I was able to find them online for.
Additionally, I wouldve had to spend an additional 100+ for the tools to remove and re-rivet my chain.
I'd say 200 for the whole she-bang is a fair price, especially if you lack the experience to do the job efficiently.
Additonal question to the forum...Why does the stock gearing for my 1981 KZ1000 seem so stoplight oriented? Current highway speed limits take me into 5th gear revs near 5000, Doesn't that seem excessive?

15/41!!!!

Stock Z1, KZ900 and early KZ1000 are 15/35.... Not sure about your year but I would think it would be close to this gearing as well...

No wonder it's "Stop Light Oriented"...

Damn thing must wheelie well though...

ok..... x-ring vs o-ring????? preferences??? and are there different sprockets for these???

aaaaand.... whats my stock ratio?? and recommended ratios???

my bike is notorious with the guys i ride with for having a slow first gear.... but.... 2nd and up.... i'm with them or outrunning them.... depending on my position in the pack... 1st gear isn't necessarily my priority... but... i do a lot of city driving...

Just guessing, but maybe existing counter shaft sprocket is one tooth over stock.

Thinking Z1E carries at least three different size counter shaft sprockets for 4 cylinder KZ750.

Good Fortune! :)

X-Ring is basically an improved O Ring design. Either will suffice, X Ring is better. Same sprockets for both.
