Hi guys...I'd like to get some considered expert opinions. I'm rebuilding calipers. Have yet to have this bike on the road, not looking forward to dumping a ton of $$$ only to find out I'll have to wait 9 mos. to actually have the scratch to get this thing rolling. There seems to be considerable corrosion from the piston seal out, and a bit on the piston itself. I am considering doing a rebuild kit for all of the rubber...and a new piston if that seems warranted at this point. I have a few questions. Can I wire wheel (dremel) the seal seat, and the outer portion of the caliper along with the bolts? Is the piston too far gone or should I replace? I have scrubbed the bejezus out of these things w/toothbrush and brake fluid. AAAAAAAAAny help is appreciate. THANKS!

replace the piston and rubber parts unless there is damage done to the bore itself then a whole caliper replacement will be needed. with the pitting that is on that piston you will never get it to seal properly again or work right for that matter.

Pricey, but it's a Stainless Steel piston for the brake calipers(about mid way down on the list):http://www.americanclassix.com/kawa_improvements.html

Thats caused by old brake fluid with moisture in it. If you reused the parts you have it will just eat up the seals in short order. Do it right & change the fluid yearly

OK guys...thanks for all of the feedback. I just posted some additional pics. Sorry if I'm not gettin' it...but do you think the calipers are possible to save??? Can I take a brass wheel and carefully clean out the seats and the outer edge??? How bout the bolts, wire wheel them too? I understand the piston is probably gonzo. I've resigned myself to replacing it along with all of the rubber. I just don't want to do that if the caliper is too far gone. Thanks again for the help:woohoo: !

The calipers are good just clean out the groove where the piston sits with the wire wheel. Replace the piston and your good to go.
