wheel bearing detonation

25 Mar 2010 16:56

finally got my rear wheel bearings in, when i pulled the rear wheel axle out little ball bearings went rolling and the inner race fell out of the bearing on the disc side.

i thought no problem, until i went to hammer out the outer race the wheel has a lip on the inside that does not let me get a drift onto the outer race, any suggestions?

if you cant fix it with a hammer and duct tape, get a bigger hammer and more duct tape!!

That is probably a circlip. I have had them eaten up and really had to work to get them out.

Get the magnifying glass out and look for the break in it so you can get something worked under it. Roy

Yep...I'm thinking circlip too...the bearing body is difficult to remove w/out removing the circlip first (don't ask me how I know this :) )

the clip is on the outside of the bearing and was very easily removed before i made the post. on the inside of the wheel there is a lip that does not allow me to access the bearing to knock it out.

I know what you are referring to. You have a big problem. There are three ways to remove that outside race. One is to heat up the rim to allow thermal expansion to do its job, the second is to chisel it out. The third is to reassemble the bearing by putting the inner race with all the balls back in. You can hold the balls in place with some five minute e-poxy or hot glue, since obviously the cage is no longer there and than knock it out the conventional way.

if you have a welder you can run a bead around the inside of the race and it will shrink it enough that it will fall out when turned over.

thought about the welder, but all i have is a 110 gasless, did not know if it would make adhesion

i will give it a go and let you know how it works

UPDATE:

even my little 110 was enough to get heat into, no adhesion, but was enough to get the race heated up enough to drop out, thanks for the tips.
