VIN number was created by Sircraigery
I've got a fairly elementary question here, for a '77 KZ650B.

A vehicles VIN should be 17 digits long. The VIN on the frame is the same format as listed in the model history.

Long story short, I'm looking for bike history (our government insurance has a free online search). Since the VIN number on the frame of the bike is the format of "KZ650B-012345". How to I account the extra space? Also, do I leave the hyphen in there?

I just can't get the search to work, can someone give me an example of the format of their VIN listen on their insurance. Just use small x's instead of numbers.

Or is the search just a POS, and I'm going it correctly?

Thanks.

Craig

in 1981 i think it was the o.e bike manufacters complied with the goverenment and went to a 17 digit vin before that it was pretty much wide open as a matter of fact my z1 is Z1F-34232 i fact when i went to register it the idiot at the registration place told me i didn't know i was talking about and he demanded to see the bike so he could show me the error of my way's trying to pull a fast one on the government and all needless to say he apologized profusly and pretty much kissed my ass the rest of the procedure by the way i had the bike in the back of the truck just case of problems like occuring.

OK, thanks man. I'll try talking to SGI about it tomorrow.

You have a ton of toys, able to ride any of them yet this year? Regina streets are fairly dry now, just a few more mods and I'm on the road.

Yeah, I grew up east of Edmonton. Moved out here for University a couple years back.
I'm taking Petro Engineering, so I'm betting I'll be back in AB as soon as my hand touches that degree.

I'm new to street machines, but I've been riding since I was 9.

There is no safety in SK for bike, just a VIN number check and some standard regulation regarding plate height, etc..

Is it the same for AB? If that's the case, I'll register it in AB since my parents live in Calgary.

you may have to get an out of province inspection done if the bike was registered in sask. before if you bring it to alberta but if it's an alberta bike that hasn't been registered anywhere but alberta then you won't have any problems.

Yeah, I'm fairly certain it is Sask bike. I rescued it from a barn (with seized carbs, BAWLD tires, and bad coils) for $350. Cleaned the carbs, and got some new coils off ebay, and she fired right up.

The guy told me he was selling it because he couldn't get it running, but he had other bikes so I'm pretty sure he didn't try to hard. I just want to make sure it's not titled, but there was no damage to it at all. Just a small dint in the tank and some paint fade, otherwise fairly good condition.

if it's been registered in sask then keep it like that at least until you get the bugs worked out like all the brake fluids change and forks seal are still holding on, little things like that will fail the bike in alberta so what i'm saying is keep it insured and registered with sask. even when you go back to alberta you have a few months to change everything over and if you don't get stopped they won't be able to ask and that way it will give you time. that's what i did when i first came back to alberta i ran on sask. plates for over ayear before anybody noticed. and since your a starving student i'm sure you would like to keep as much money in your pocket as possible. by the way an out of province will cost anywhere from 150 to 250 plus any repairs they have to do to allow it to pass.

Welcome Craig.
When I tried getting insurance for my '78 650, the Inurance company had to use the VIN # sequence from a late model 650 to find any 650s at all.
VIN # is like this: JKAKZEH11CA012345

I just bought an '82 650 H2/CSR and it has a 17 digit VIN like above.

Ok thanks Nick. I'll talk to them about it, hopefully they can just take my VIN the way it is.

I did a Canada wide search, and it has come up with no matches at all. I'm assuming that since the bike has been sitting in the barn so long, that it fell off the system. I know that it was at least a Canadian bike.

I talk through email to a guy from a chopshop in Calgary, and he said that all I need is an out of province inspection (which they do for $150), and to make sure my frame is strong. That with the law requirements for things like lights, brakes, exhaust, etc and I should be ok.

All-in-all, Sask's SGI has gotten so greedy with premiums, that I would definitely get the bike registered in AB.

Also, if I ever decide to ride the bike home, since I have an AB licence, I would not have insurance as soon as I leave Sask. How stupid is that??? Since I don't hold a SK licence, I would only have insurance in SK. ? Yep, I asked them to repeat that.

For a 2002 Yamaha R6, SGI wanted $1100/yr, while the company I deal with in AB wanted $600/yr. Very similar story for my truck. I remember when Sask had cheaper insurance, now it's damned expensive.
