Adding a Tailpiece to a 650SR

I have always liked the front on the SR(d) model(mostly the tank), and the ass end of the standard KZ. Is the seat pan the only difference on these models to allow a tail piece to be added or should I expect some mods to both. I added a tail piece to a SR I had back in the mid '80's but I don't think it was even from a Kaw and I butchered the seat as well. A few to many good times since then and three kids has clouded the memory of the project since then.

I think you will be lacking all the mounts to mount the duck tail. i had to do the same thing to my GPz. If you look at the thread, it will show you what I did to mount mine.

The rear frame geometry is different between the D models and the B/C models.

The frame is different, and lacks the mounts, but it can be done.
There is a nice red 650 D(SR) in the gallery somewhere.
Looks good with a tail.

Thanks rstnick. Both nice bikes, I think the blue one is the look I'm after though. Hopefully mine pops up as a project before to long.

I think that a tail from a ZN700/750/1100 would look nice on the bike. I think that it could be mounted with out much effort. The frame on my 1000CSR was also quite a bit different than the one on the GPz1100. It took me about a day to figure it out and mount the tail.

I will check out that tail Otto, but now you may have motivated me to try building one from scratch with fiberglass. Being a carpenter by trade, I could whip out a form pretty quick then skin it and see what happens. Going this route I could incorporate mounting locations that jive with the frame better. I'm a little worried it may come out looking somewhat boxy until I figure how to get some contours. Seems I've seen somewhere that tin foil is used in between the form and the glass to ease in seperation...is that right?

If you use The open cell insulation foam (not the white closed cell) Carve your tail piece just like you want it. Use Epoxy resin not Poly Ester resin to build the tail piece This resin will not attack the foam. If you want to use Poly Ester resin first use a good coat of Polly Urethane (oil based) varnish to coat it. Than you pain it with PVA (this is a water soluble release barrier. Than you can build up the cloth any way you want to. To remove the plug once the glass is cured just dig it out with a putty knife. It will come out very easy. Once the majority of the foam is removed just soak it in water and the rest will come right off. This is how you do it over a MALE plug. It is very simple. To do it into a Female mold is much more complicated. This fairing was built over an original GPz550 fairing and than popped off I used PVA and wax as a release agent.

Thanks for the tips, I just may have to give it a shot. Found a couple of tails on Ebay that you referred to, I like the way the tail light tucks in there.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationThese are designed to mount to the inner fender and not to the frame like all the others.
