Monoshock conversion? was created by les holt
For those of you who want a monoshock but haven't done it, what has stopped you from doing it. I would like to know what has been the reason for putting it off. I know that fabrication knowledge or lack thereof slows some, money slows others or the idea of having to piece everthing together or just having your ride down for anytime. I'm curious as to what has kept you from going with your dream conversion. I know time has been my number 1 reason.

Found no need. Why, when two do the job just fine. also when standard shocks go bad they are simple and cheep to replace. Quick, Easy, Clean adjustment of two. Thirty Two years with dual shocks and they have worked just fine. Why fix something that's not broken.

I'm asking because I'm doing this to a turbo project I'm working on for myself. I'm concidering building another jig to build the arms and brackets to allow the average person with little fabricating skills to install the kit themselfs. If interest isn't high enough I'll just use my present dual shock jig and build a 1 off for myself. The arm is going to be 4" over and made of 1 1/2 X 2 1/2 seamless tubing. I'm basically feeling out it's acceptance before going thru all the added tooling work.
Thanks

There are quite a few guys who love this mod. You might be quite successful with it. I just have a plethora of GS1100 swing arms and have no need to do this mod. Some guys want the more modern swing arms that take much larger wheels & tires, so for them the mod is almost a must.

I would guess that most guys are like me. i dont have the welding equipment to do a major mod. by going dual , it appears much easier, and therefore appears, cheaper.
Thats what i thought when i did mine. it was cheaper as far as the labor i had to farm out, but i think mono parts can be found cheaper. I guess that may depend on what kind of arm u want. I went with a zrx12 arm, and there usually more money.
If i had to do it over i would go mono.
1 reason is that i think it may be cheaper in the end or close , for a better handling bike, to go mono.
There are a few reasons to make a change in the first place. 1 is the wide tire look. another is the mono look, and lastly, performance. I don’t think most guys ride there bike hard enough to do this for performance reasons. some do for sure, but not most.

There are a lot more shock options in the mono type, available for very cheap. to get 2 GOOD standard shocks u need at least $600.
How could u make a bolt on mono? Sound interesting.

I'm not talking a full bolt in but having minimal welding. I know how I was going to do mine but am looking at adding the additional labor now and designing a fairly simple install without having to chop and have little welding on chassis. Between job, shop, and family it's hard to get free time to step outside the box. Just feeling out peoples feelings on the subject. With the available parts from the newer sport bikes it's hard not to graft them into sleek retromodded old school.

I supose if u found the most popular swingarm convertion and made a kit for it? maybe there would be enough interest?

Your not that far off from what I'm proposing. I'm actually concidering building the arm also. I really can't see the arm costing more than $300 with an axel to suit your bearing diameters. I plan on using ZX wheels with a 190 tire so the first ones will be based around this as to chain guard and brake arm placement. I'm still going to make the old version with 2 shocks but I think it's time to expand on an old idea.

i'm wondering what a modern bike swing arm goes for on ebay?? pretty cheap i think.
1 issue with a 190 tire will be frame clearance. u will need to flatten the inside of the frame rails, as u will need a 5/8" offset sprocket.
i can only get a 170mm on mine with a zrx arm. my steering neck must have been installed way off center. this created havick , triing to align the wheels. i still cant get them any closer than 1/4" out .:S but u cant tell while riding it.

What has stopped me are a few things:

1. Once I tear the bike apart I don't have anything else to ride and I'm afraid it will be apart a long time.

2. I'm not a fabricator or welder.

3. money

I am definitely doing the conversion though. I already have a 1999 Zx-6 arm and a rear wheel. No rear brake yet. Have a 2003 ZX-6 front end but haven't figured out what to do about gauges and ignition.
