Folks in the know (GS swing arm mod)
04 Mar 2010 08:53 - 04 Mar 2010 08:55
What does this add? I have read articles & I think this is a bolt on modification & allows me to go with slightly wider rim & tire. Am I close in understanding? I am not a fabricator or welder & don't know any (live just outside of DC), so I guess I'm just looking for something proven. I want wider tires & do not need or want a drag racing swing arm on the bike.
Oh, the bike is a '76 KZ900.
Thanks in advance!

It is not quite a bolt on, it does require some careful shimming and other miner swaps. What it is for is that there is less flex in the swing arm and the bike handles better in very high speed turns. Since you have a KZ900, there will be some fabricating work due to the fact that you will have to either convert the swing arm to take a drum brake or convert your bike to disc brake in the back. This mod is much simpler on bikes that have a rear disc brake. You will also require different rear shocks. These shocks are designed for a GoldWing.
Here is my mod with the GS1100 swing arm.

over on the gs forum there are members who have been using 4.5" rims from early gsxr's and other sportbikes in gs1100/1150 swingarms without many mods. Anyone tried or heard of this?

Thank you. Only ask because I'm going to have rims, spokes & tires replaced, & want to improve the handling/tire width portion of the bike... but I really do not have much interest in disturbing the bike much. It's a fantastic original, with very little tampering.
