17" rear wheel, what box swingarm for 78 kz650??
03 Mar 2010 18:47
Hey guys I was thinking about changing the rear swing arm on my 78 kz650c, to a more modern tire and brake set up with a 17" wheel. I know I need a box swingarm, because I want to keep the dual shock setup. So I was wondering what are my options for swingarms?? What is the easiest fit?? How wide of a rear tire can i get on it?? Thanks a ton in advance, Nik.

86-89 Gsxr750 and 86-88 Gsxr1100 are box style and aluminum. You should be able to squeeze a 180 but not much more than that into one.
Zx6D (90-93) and Zx6E (93-2004) arms might work as well. I don't recall if they are steel or aluminum though. I know the Zx6D/E came with a 4.5" rim stock so you can at least run a 170 tire in the arm.

Anything wider than a 4" rim and you will also have to offset your chain and front sprocket. Your best bet would be the Zephyr rims and swing arm. This will allow you to retain the dual shocks. The problem with swing arms that get too wide is that the upper shock mounts will no longer line up. You should just stay with your swing arm and go to a 16" LTD rear rim.
