I bought a 1976 KZ900 and I don't think that the bike is original. The bike is painted black with brown side panels, heres where it gets confusing. Under the black the original color of the tank looks to be green, which would make it a Kz900 A4, but it has mag wheels and looking at your site only the LTD came with mags and it was red. The serial number is Z1F-102045. Maybe someone can shed some light on the situation.

1976 Kawasaki KZ900 A4
1976 Honda CB750 4
1978 Honda 550K 4
1967 Honda Super 90
1965 Honda 305 Dream
2009 Yamaha 1300S Venture

I believe Z1F is an A4 engine i.d. number, and that Z1E would be a B1 (LTD) engine i.d. number. Correction: Z1F refers to A4 Frame number. And Z1E refers to all KZ900 Engine numbers.

Is the frame info tag still on the steering neck?

Oem A4 had drum rear brake.

Oem B1 had disc rear brake, with exposed rear master cylinder mounted to frame tab above rear passenger peg.

Many parts were interchangeable between the two models.

Post a pic and we'll pick at it.

Good Luck! :)

Thanks, Roy and Kawickrice. :cheer:

To further clarify ---

All KZ900 engines were produced in Japan for KZ900-A4 and KZ900-B1(LTD).
And all KZ900-B1(LTD) were produced in the USA at Kawasaki's plant in Lincoln, Nebraska (using KZ900 engines produced in Japan).

Zedder's reported Engine No. Range Z1E086001~138846 covers all KZ900 engines.

The Kawasaki FSM Supplement for KZ900-B1(LTD) says beginning Engine number Z1E086001 (non-consecutive), which coincides with Zedder's numbers.
And says beginning Frame number for KZ900-B1(LTD) is KZ900B-500011.

These number ranges are consistent with the numbers on my purchased new KZ900-B1(LTD).

But dreamin may yet be wondering which non-stock parts have been grafted onto his A4.

Good Luck! :)
