75 kz400 gear box assembly - speedo

Well - I went for a lovely ride yesterday, front end started making noise at 50-55, finally figured the speedo quit working.....nosie went away when it quit. Cable seems fine. Any quick tips on what to do to check the gear box assembly? Is it dangerous to run it as it if the assemble is messed up? I am a newbie.....help.

I found the part number is 41078-006 I suppose if in fact the gear box is messed up. Is it a horrible pain to replace?

You say the cable seems fine... did you actually take it off and make sure the inner cable (inside the sheath) is still one piece?

It's funny because I've had what you describe happen to me before... as the speedo cable slowly unscrewed itself off the speedo from the vibration... made the crazy noise, the needle started jumping all over the place... then it all quit...

I'll check out the gear housing tomorrow. The cable seemed fine at first inspection. The noise is gone as is the functioning of the speedo. Perhaps when I take apart the housing I will find something broken. Then the fun may begin of finding a replacement! I'll let you know. Thanks!
