Fork spring installation - which way?
06 Feb 2010 14:30
The springs have one end that is coiled tighter for about 2 inches. Does this end face up towards the tube cap or down towards the tube bottom?
I didn't pay attention when I took it apart and the manual I have doesn't specify. I looked at the other fork I haven't done yet and they are at the top, but I wanted to double check. I'm pretty sure it doesn't make much difference either way, but I've done other bikes where it is specific.
Thanks!

Ok, I'll put the tapered/coiled end on the bottom. Guess I had them in upside down before, at least on the left side.
I put Progressive springs in my VFR and I recall it said it didn't matter too.
Thanks

Ok I'm confused, I can't determine which end has a taper. Look and measure pretty much the same.

Copied this from a Prgressive installation guide:
Install your new fork springs into the forks. Mechanically, it
makes no difference which way the springs are installed. Some
manuals will state; install the spring with the close wound end towards
the bottom. This is done because sometimes there will be
less spring noise. The springs will perform exactly the same regardless
of which direction they are placed.
So I'm going with close coiled end down.

The Pros Know.. At my Pappa's Knee, was told the tight wind goe's to stationary end.. However, w/ forks which specify cc amounts of oil only, I install w/tight winds down, hopefully raising oil level (slightly)& reducing possible ariation. G
