Hi Guys,

How do I mockup the mountings when converting to mono shock on my KZ750 -82 ?

Do I assume the position of the wheel when the spring is´nt compressed and hope it will sit fine wheel the bike is placed on the gorund ?

Do I try to set the ride hight by assuming how much the spring will compress when placed on the ground ?

I have a Yamaha YZF 1000 -99 swingarm and shock. Have fitted the swing to the frame and welded on the brackets for the lower mount for the shock.

Please give me some hints !

For mine, I measured a ZX636 setup for I used both front/rear in my conversion....

If possible find a Yamaha YZF 1000 to measure off of...

Once you've got the approximate position make the top mount adjustable as on most modern bikes or make some adjustable or different tie bars.(longer to lower the bike or shorter to lift the bike) then you can get it set up perfect once it's rebuilt. EASY ;)

Another way for you to get an idea of where you want this upper support mounted....

Measured off a ZX 6R... 13" to this chain pivot tube guard bolt. May be different on yours but there should be something up towards the pivot tube area where you can get a reference measurement off of.

ZX6 manual for shock spring height set at default spec....

Support bike under engine and rear tire and leave swingarm pivot bolt loose enough to rotate for the same 13" measurements from the guard bolt to the ground... Don't forget what ever measurement under the tire to include in your measurements.

Then where ever the top shock mount is located, insure the shock/spring going through the arm is not going to hit or bind....

Fabricate your mounting structure for full support (top, side and back) for you definitely don't want to this mount to not hold for this is directly under your arse... :pinch:

Also keep in mind what your going to do with all your electrical and battery for this will require modifications as well...

Tack weld your supports in place and again insure no bind as the swing arm is bounced up and down...

All good... No w go have a beer or better yet...Dr, Pepper! ;)

Thanks for your input Zeb.

Yeah...have been thinking about making it adjustable. But I dont really know how to do it best. On the shock itself you can adjust approx 25mm or one inch up/down.

You dont have any pics of the tie bars you mentioned ?

Thanx Old,

Lol..yeah I think I will have the welds ultra sounded for cracks befor I get on it...dont wanna risk my balls :woohoo:

Will try to find a bike to measure from...not that eazy right now since it 25 cm (10") of snow outside. Will visit a dealer and act as an serious buyer very interesed in ride hight...

Good...the 13 inch measure (in your case) seems to be something to aim for.

Do you have a 17/55/180 tire on ?

Do you have an "project" on your build...have to search..

Guess if I go for 13" too I would be close to the money.
I also will have a 17/55/180 rear wheel.

Sorry...but what bike is yours ?
A z1000 ? Woldnt mine be close to yours in ride hight ?
I will swop the front for a ZFR 1000 and can ajust the stance a bit there..

(will make a hard target search on you now...:woohoo:

Hi Old,

Saw your pics at cyclemadness and how you mounted the swing.
I want to keep the place for the battery and electronics and will go for braces horizontally.

Have a good one..

PS. You have done a hell of a job with your bike...I like ! DS.

hey Arnold The tie bars that Zeb speaks of are available on ebay they are what i would call the dogbones They come in all sorts of lengths. OMR is a pretty good source of info on the mono shock setup. I think it would be easier to work on the setup if you removed the shock spring. That would allow you to put the shock through its full stroke. Keep it up.
