Just bought a great 80 KZ750. The bike came with a new chain with a master link. The sprockets are in great shape although the rear sprocket looks smaller than it should be/stock. I went to put on the new chain and it's way too long, like 8-10 inches too long. The old chain isn't there to measure. I'm guessing I'll just wrap the chain around the sprockets with the tire all the way in and the remove a link with a Dremel. Does this sound like an ok idea??

make sure its the right series of chain to match sprockets,and slide wheel towards front of adjustment to allow for future stretch when you cut it

Sure it sounds good. If you have a bench grinder they work great for cutting the links lose.

I've used an angle grinder to do this on the bike. I just wrap some newspaper around stuff I don't want the grindings to get in or on. However you do it, make sure not to grind into the side plates, and get a new clip for the master link, and if the loose side plate of the master link just slides on, rather then having to be pressed on, replace the whole master link.

Before cutting....

Whats your manual depict for sprocket(s) tooth counts and chain pitch/link counts... You may need or desire to place your gear ratio back to stock if these are out of spec...

Where do you have your rear rim/tire adjusters set at for your initial start?

As for cutting, hand angle grinder works fine... Dremel could be used I guess but will take some time....

Is the master a clip or rivet tip... Doesn't really matter other than clip orientations...

Thanks for the tips. The sprockets are actually all original but they must be new or close to it as I can't see any wear on them. Cut the chain and put it on, simple enough. Strange though, when measuring with the wheel all the ways forward the chain measured very slack. There was no way for me to advance to the next pin in order to have the chain reasonably tight so I could get the most wear out of it possible. It tightens up of course with adjustment but it just seemed odd.

not odd just the way it works out the biggest thing to watch out for when you move the axle all the way forward like that is make sure you have enough clearance for your tire on the swingarm and brake stay, other than that you shouldn't have any problems.
