Mono shock? was created by nebiker51
I have to ask, having never owned a mono shock bike for dirt or road, what if any advantage to a mono over twin shocks? Can't be a big weight difference since the mono shock looks larger and whatever frame support that has to be added. Is it just a different look you're going for?

I'd bet most on here do it for the look/cool custom factor. Allows a larger rear tire. Cheaper to upgrade. One Ohlins is cheaper than two. Allows for ride height adjustment with cheap dogbones. My $0.02.

Gives the back end that new open look and shows off your new swing arm and fattie. Bling thing...

Other than a fattie... :S it does provide finer tuning
in your suspension (height to ground (spring), damping, rebound, soft or hard etc...)based on load weight, road surfacing, riding styles etc...

Old kaw suspension, you had a few clicks on the rear shocks... Granted, all we had back then even on dirt bikes but compared to new... Naw there's a hell of a lot more than just looks....

Same time, you have a stock OEM setup, maybe air shocks, OEM engine build, don't ride like a raped ape just cruise and the dual rears will most likely just be fine.... ;)

Oh....You're comparing it to stock shocks. That is different. I have always heard stock shocks are bad if you roll it out of the factory. There are a few double shocks that I think compare to a single setup performance wise. I would also think of strength. A wide three point triangle seems to me to be stronger. I can see the swingarm upgrade it's lighter and stiffer but you need to upgrade the bearing and stiffen the frame to really see a difference there too. As for the fattie  being better over the stock tire in performance that is an arguable point also. Unless it's for a drag bike I still think it's a blingy thingy. Not that that's a bad thingy. I like blingy too. (But not on my thingy). :S

X-Rated Version of this argument.
Hey you got blingy on my thingy!!
Well you got your thingy in my blingy!
With apologies to Reeses PB Cups.....

Honey, it's 15 degrees out can I go ride my bike now?

BTW, For the KZ1000, I'm staying with dual rear shocks...
Thinking air shocks is the way to go... Yes/No?
Thoughts anyone who has them...

Thanks,

OMR

+1 on the air shocks
This is the new bike that you will keep fairly stock for rides with the wife, no? No other system allows so much adjustment for preload. It would be trick if you could adapt a Goldwing setup.

"This is the new bike that you will keep fairly stock for rides with the wife, no?"...

Yup, staying stock as much as possible. No engine/cam/carb mods even. Goal is to keep it under $1K....

Thanks,

Single rear shocks offer superior suspension qualities (think about the linkage). One can get wide rear tires and maintain the look of the twin rear shocks. There is no rigidity found in having two rear shocks out back as opposed to one up in the center...remember shocks are meant to smoothly track the rear over suspension irregularities, so if the rear shocks offered rigidity that would be counter productive to what one would want the rear to do.

:)

"fatties"...you boys can't be left alone for a minute! :woohoo:
