How can i lower my 79 KZ650sr ?
12 Dec 2009 22:28
I have a 79 KZ650sr i'm building as a cafe racer or possibly a street fighter . I'm not sure which yet . I guess it's according how easy it will be to shorten the front end . If anyone has any ideas on this please help .Any info on front and rear swaps would be helpful too. Thanks

That depends on how low you want to go.
How much clearance you want, and how hard your air shock setup should be.
You can slide the fork tubes up an inch or so. I've seen lots of guys run like that.
Or swap the whole front end out... so many options.
Good luck.

easiest an cheapest way:
Front end: Loosen fork tube clamps on triple trees and slide them up until you cant anymore. You cant lower it too much before you start hitting the handlebars. You can lower it about an inch more if you can raise up the hanlebars so the fork tubes ont hit them. You can make your own little handlebar riser by getting 2 more of the top clamps that hol your handlebars down, flip them upsie down in the handlebar recess's on your top triple tree. Lay your handlebars in them, and put your original 2 top clamps over the hanlebars. You will then just need bolts that are a little longer than the ones you pulled out.
Rear end: Find shocks from a bike that are a little shorter than yours, or build struts to whatever length you want.

Ok , thanks for the info . I am not sure how low I want it but I had moved the forks before I tore the bike down and it didn't really set the way I wanted it too . I want it to set kind of like the old flat track bikes . Real short front end . If I can't get it setting the way I want it I guess I'll look into a street fighter style swap.
