Removing a chain link? was created by polkat
I want to shorten my drive chain (630 type) by one link (I already have a new master link), but the old rivet is rolled over on the end and my chain breaker won't push it through. Should I try grinding away the rivet head?

I didn't think you could shorten a chain by one link. I thought it had to be by 2's. Or does an inside/outside combo count as one?

Grinding the rolled edge is the best way providing you don't gouge a cut into the adjacent link that stays on the chain. Just take your time.

Hi Polkat,

Removing a link is a decent short term fix. However you will likely find that you'll soon have to remove another as you've worn through the hardened surfaces of your chain.

Really, the only real solution is to replace the chain and both sprockets at the same time.

Course, I'm thinking you're doing maintenance. If you're doing custom work, grind away.

Don't mind me.

I only say that because I seem to remember someone figuring one link would be perfect but when they had to cut two it was too short. Ruined their day.
