Damping Rod Holder for KZ440
17 Nov 2009 12:04
Have a leaking seal on my winter project, so pulled the forks and removed the spring, but am unable to hold the damping rod securely enough to remove it. Local shops want $100+ in labor to finish the job. So, I'm looking for a source for a damping rod holder (the forked stick suggested in the forum didn't work out for me). My question is: "Is this the tool"
The sources that I've found don't specify a part number, and I'd hate to spend the money only to find out that it won't drop down the 33mm tubes.
I'm also looking for a source for the tool if you know one, and maybe a concept for inventing the wrench that I will also need. Thanks.

I don't know what "forked stick" you are refering to, but I took a piece of 3/4" sguare stock,(oak from Home Depot), carved it down to the same shape as the tool in your picture, tapped it in with a hammer, held it from turning with a crescent wrench, and removed the bolt. Worked great with no hassles.

Apply some heat to the allen bolt using a propane torch.
Mine was stuck & the heat did the trick - I was able to remove the first one using an old rake handle (I carved the end of it into the shape of a cone - not sure what shape is needed for your bike - mine is an 81 650).
