Retro fitting ZRX1200 KYB Shocks to '80 Z1R
12 Nov 2009 05:55
Sorry, posted this in the 'New Projects' section, but it is more fitting here...
Hey dudes...
I have access to a great new pair of Ohlin's shocks for my project, but have been doing some economical thinking; I might be able to save a few $ and run a set of the piggy-backed KYBs that come stock on the 'Rexs.
Has anyone on here attempted this? If so was it an easy swap or an involved nightmare?
Thanks in advance!
-Mike

Mark,
Gonna try to run the stock Z1R swingarm, just gave it a service. I agree that a slightly taller shock could be a great improvement!
What do you think?

Do u want to ride it hard, or are u a cruiser.
If u want to ride hard, and want an improvement , go ahead and use the kyb's. if u are a cruiser u wont likely notice any dif.
u will not likely, loose money on these if u resell.
I like they way mine handle, it just the week frame i dont like..

Mark,
I'd say 70/30 as far as aggressive riding / cruising with the wife ratio. I have my motocross bikes and ridiculous supermoto project XL to be 100% nuts with!
In fact, I threw a plate on the Z1R yesterday (it was sorta sunny and high 50s in NY) and went out for a few hours. I learned I have some carb tweaks to do - nothing too serious, plus I want to get a set of VM34RS's for it this winter. The tach drive seal needs to be replaced - I got a little nervous for a second...
But I really enjoyed the power and the beautiful exhaust note of the inline 4!
