I'd like to improve the performance of the front drum brake on my 80' KZ440B. What kind of upgrades are there for type of brake? I'm new to drums.

I dont' want to go as far as swap the front...I really like the look of the drum. I think it fits in well with the style of the bike.

Are there better pads available like the HH pads for disks? Anyone have experience with them?

id say heat is going to be biggest issue with drum ,causing brake fade.another thing you need to remember is your brakes are mechanical versus hydraulic

The 1980 KZ440-Ltd had a front disk brake.
Choosing function over form might be the thing to do.

I had a front drum brake on my old BSA. I found the most effective way to stop the bike in the rain once water got in the drum was to hit a Buick. Effective, but not without its drawbacks. I'd say reconsider a front disk. Ed

make sure that little transfer rod from the front to back shoe is adjusted correctly so the shoes both hit at the same time. have the cable well lubed and adjusted. check the shoes to make sure the friction part is not separating from the backing and you should be good to go. ya guys got to remember this a 370 lbs bike a front drum will get you out of the trouble 26 hp will get you into to (well most cases) and it will look better to boot. if you are having poor brake performance just diassassemble, lube, reassemble and adjust.

+1 from me. The drum brakes are too cool to swap out. I guess when you are riding you just need to ride a little proactivly. I love the look of the drum brakes.
