Kickstand is weird! was created by polkat
1982 KZ750H. This bike leans wayyy over when on the kickstand (looks and feels like it's about to fall over!). When on the center stand, I extended the kickstand and took a look. It doesn't appear to be bent, and the bolt holding it together is quite tight, but you can grab the arm and wiggle it up and down over 1/2 inch. It looks like the tab that the stand is attached to is welded on, and I don't see any kind of adjustment. Any suggestions about a fix?

I have a 1980 Shaft drive I'm having the same problem on. My wife backed into the bike with my truck and bent the original kick stand badly. I bought a new one off EBAY and installed it, but the bike leans badly. I have a 2x4 its sitting on now to make it more stable. Hopefully someone can answer your question.

1/2 inch seems like a lot of play. id take it off and give it a squeeze in a vice to tighten it up somewhat and put it back and see how that works

fixer5000, not sure what you mean? The kickstand arm is held to it's mounting tab with a bolt. What would I be squeezing? Not the bolt of course.

At first I thought that maybe the part of the frame tube that the mounting tab is welded to had twisted over the 27 years of the bike's life, but that doesn't seem likely.

Whoops! I'm getting even more confused. This setup has the arm, which one bolt goes through, and then through the tab welded to the frame, and into a nut on the other side that seems to be welded (factory-not by some owner) to the back of the tab (or mounting plate if you will). Other then that there's just the retracting spring.

There may also be a detent ball between the arm and plate, but I haven't taken it apart yet to see.

I don't see two mounts there! Or are you speaking of the center stand?

Take a look at the the sidestand itself, not the frame (see part labeled 34024 in pic). It is shaped like a yoke where the bolt goes through 2 holes. If the 2 sides of the "yoke" have spread, making the opening too wide, it will have too much play. I believe that is what is suggested should be squeezed together. If by chance it isn't shaped like a yoke with a hole through each tang, maybe one tang has been broken off in which case you'll need a new sidestand pronto before the bike falls. Ed

Now I see. As they say, pictures speak a thousand words. Didn't realize the thing might be yoked like that. I will check for that in the morning. If it is snapped off, where can I find another one (no salvage yards here)?
Thanks!

fixer5000 was right. The little fork at the end of the stand was spread. Not too much, but it doesn't take much. A little hammer tapping, some lube, and a small spacer washer added under the head of the bolt, and it's almost too tight now! I figure with just a slight amount of wear it will come in nicely. Thanks!!
