never rebuilt a front kz1000 brake, how?? was created by newOld_kz1000
I need to rebuild completely the front and rear brakes on my 1978 kz1000 A (standard model).

I've never rebuilt a disc brake before.

The front lever doesn't move, and the master cylinder is empty, just some funky residue. Same with the rear pedal and mstr cyl. However, the front and rear wheels move freely. And none of the brake parts have messed with -- all stock, all parts on the bike.

The bike sat for 12 years.

How should I proceed? I have tools, just don't know
how to rebuild them.

Thanks.

do you have a factory service manual. if not then you might want one.

should be able to get rebuild kits from z1 enterprises.

i had the same trouble with mine when i got it. i just took the brake line off and removed master cyl. put brake fluid in and started working it. took a pick and pulled all the crud out of the bowl and mine started working. but there should be a snap ring where the lever pushes the plunger. take it out and remove the whole cartrage. a rebuild kit comes with a new one.

there is a special long nosed snap ring plier that goes right down the piston bore that is very handy to have you can buy it from kawi or motion pro also sells one. almost impossible to do without it unless you don't mind tearing some stuff up. by the way that is for the mastercylinder the brake calipers compressed air is your friend for working on those you will need that to blow the pistons out of the calipers and one side note saftey first watch your fingers and where safety glasses brake fluid in your eyes sucks.

If they are that bad I would replace the MC and rebuild the calipers. You can find a good MC on ebay and z1 sells the caliper rebuild kits. Just make sure you clean out the piston seal grove with a wire wheel on a dremmel and your good to go. I have a new MC and braided line laying around if your interested. It's the same one that sells on ebay for $80. It's not a correct part if your keeping it stock or doing a restoration but it's nice. $40 includes shipping. Send me a PM if your interested.
