Help with brake drum
12 Oct 2009 22:00
I broke the ear off my drum break, right at the torque bar. What other years or models will work with my 1980 750G Twin?

Parts can be cross-referenced at Kawasaki.com.
I find it easiest to search by year only without entering a vin or anything. Once into the diagrams, click the part number, then in the new window click the yellow/black ? icon.

Thanks for the info. It doesn't cross reference with any models. Something has to work in this rim. Any other ideas?

What size is your drum? I know of two different sizes for sure, but there might be more than two. Post the measurement and you will probably get some help on what might work. If another drum will not work you may have to get a new rear wheel with the correct drum.

A measurement might help, but shouldn't be necessary. Measure the ID of the drum where the panel fits.
Cross-reference all of the other panel assembly parts to see what other bikes will most likely match.
By any chance, is your panel black?

I'll get some measurements. The panel is not black, it is just raw.

650ed, you are my hero. I saw the grungy one on ebay but missed the clean ones. I think I was searching under drum brake not backing plate.

Just bought the $16 one. Thanks again 650ed. It helps if you know the real name for these parts!
I had a local engineering company heli-arc weld my broken one. It will work until I get the one from ebay.

I asked about it being black because that may be why it has a different part number. I'd guess that your damaged panel isn't stock. Not that it matters, but one from any KZ550, 650 or 750-Twin will most likely work. Glad you found one.
PS: If it hasn't been done (or if you don't know the age of them), replace the rear brake shoes. The glue that binds the lining to the shoes can fail over time, leading to a locked rear wheel. Mine locked when rolling the wheel off the center stand - very lucky.
Hee. Kawasaki calls it a rear brake panel.....It helps if you know the real name for these parts!....
