Z650 frame oddity

04 Oct 2009 09:17
#325412
Hello all,

Please take a look at this picture of my Z650's frame (sorry for the bad quality) :

Can anybody tell me what the piece of pipe at the center is for?
It does appear on the drawings in my part book (1982-1983), but not on the previous versions.

Any clue would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to KZR. It's for a factory cable lock.

At last, I understand! Thanks a lot Mark!
Do you by any chance have information on that factory cable lock (picture, reference number?)

Since your bike was never released in North America, we can get no information on it or parts for it (the USA Kawasaki internet site is strictly for models released in the US...not even 'Canada only' models info is available). So if that cable lock system was unique to the F4, then it'll have to come from someone with a European released microfiche.

Apparently the Kawasaki cable lock was also mounted on the GPZ1100, KZ550 and KZ750 Spectre - and maybe also on other Kawasaki bikes of the early 80's which were released in the US.
Anyways, as you can see, hardly anybody knows about this option and detailed information is difficult to find - which is surprising for an original Kawasaki part, don't you think? I have a lot of documents regarding the 650 F4, including exploded views & part lists, etc... but not a word about the cable lock.

Thanks to all for your answers.

That was sweet. Now, that tube is continuous all the way through to the frame tube wall on the other side from the entry point. Beware trying to f**! with this thing! It requires some real good welding skills to cover up attempts to remove the stub out. Ask me how I know!

There is a braided steel cable embedded in the tube and up through the appliance you see in the pic. There will probably be the remainder of the cable in the stub out.

My advice: Make it look smooth and pretty and forget it.

Good luck on the project. You will find lots of satisfaction in the process. I have.
