Getting ready for some painting....got the decals last week and paint should arrive next week. Got the tank ready, but I'm having trouble removing the emblems off the side cover. Can't get the "nuts" to move even with PB Blaster. Anyone have any suggestions before I start losing patience and ruin one of them?

Thanks!

small flat bladed screwdriver work it around the fastener prying up at the same time gently and it should come off fairly easy. and if it works right you should even be able to reuse them.

Link, Badges are very soft, Be careful.. I believe the nuts are "goofy" IE; stamped tin or light guage steel hollow self threading colletts. try giving them a gentle squeeze at opposing flats. this may cause them to distort & loosen or bite deeper into posts and break surface tension.. even if these fail, and posts snap, don't toss emblems 'til you find out if new ones are still avail.as in "worst case scenario" You can still epoxy 'em back on. Those aren't nuts their keeper that slide over the studs and bite in .I'd tap a little in the studs to try to push them through not hard becauce I think those emblems are plastic you can try the screwdriver thing to but be careful thy break easy . If they break you cah glue em or use some double sided tape to hold em back.. Luck to you..

The little "nuts" are still available. They're called, "Nut,Lock,3mm" - part #92018-005. I removed the emblems on my KZ650 (it uses the same nuts) by CAREFULLY cutting the nuts with a Dremel. Just be careful not to hit the emblem pins. I believe the pins will break if you try to pry the nuts off because the nuts tend to cut into the pins. Ed

Thanks for the help guys. I tried tapping the studs and wasn't getting any movement. As Ed mentioned, these do look like they're still available so I think I'll try and carefully cut them off.

Can't wait to send pics of the paint job, I'm going for the OEM look.

Just thought I'd close this out by saying that using the Dremel with a thin cutting blade worked the best. Took about 20 minutes carefully cutting the "teeth" off the locknuts and the emblems popped right off.

Thanks again!

I know you already got them off, but just thought I'd add that the old fasteners are usually brittle, so if you score them w a dremel cutter then pry them, they should crumble away. Mine did.

For reattachment... By BARNEYHYPHEN:
For what it's worth, I just re-attached my repainted side cover badges by using a small 6x32 die and cutting a thread on each pin them used s/s nylon lockwasher nuts with a dab of loctite threadlocker on each. Cut the threads 1/4 turn then back-off, 1/ turn etc. Worked well.

Yeah, one of my goals it to ride back to Lincoln, Nebraska on the 900 as kind of a pilgrimage. It's only a 6-7 hour ride so if I can get the bike back together by this summer, that's the plan.

Thanks, JMKZHI...I'll keep the threadcutting in mind. Although I'm hoping not to have to repaint anytime in the near future!

I did not cut threads on my emblems, so I don't really know if it works fine for all bikes. The emblem studs are kinda fragile, so use whatever method that seems appropriate to you. I actually used the stock-type fasteners on my 650CSR (they're the same push-on type as yours).
