Loose Steering ? How to tighten it up?
24 Aug 2009 10:39
SO my bikes steering has gotten a little looser in the past couple of weeks and I am wondering how to adjust it.
There is the big hexagonal nut at the top...is that it or is there another nut somewhere else under the triple tree to adjust?
Thanks dudes

You can take that big nut off and loosen the top triple tree bolts. Have someone hold the handle bars for you and tighten the nut underneith.
Don't tighten it too tight like i did. It makes it hard to tun into curves!

yes there is another lock ring located under the top clamp you will have to back off the center nut and the top clamp fork tube pinch bolts then you can get at it. if you need any more help i can talk you thru the adjustment procedure.

Be sure to loosen the upper triple pinch bolt first.

Take a look at the manual or have someone shoot you a copy of the section on this service. There's a specific way to check the steering and to tighten it so it isn't too tight. Too tight WILL dimple the steering stem races and you will have "notchy" steering until you replace the bearings. Long term solution - replace bearings with tapered roller type, but in the mean time adjust according to Kawasaki factory manual. Ed

Possible for someone to send me a link to this procedure in the Factory Service manual? I have the hanes and clymer, but I do not trust them.

trust them steering head adjustment is pretty much the same for most bikes the haynes and clymer manuals are very good for most things in fact i really haven't found much wrong info in them over the years most info in them is taken from the o.e companies directly anyway. one of those manuals is better than nothing by the way if that is all you have then by all means use it. by the way i have been a motorcycle mechanic for 19 years so i've had lots of oppertunity to use them all.

I've used the various manuals for BSA's and Kawasakis since 1965 and I wouldn't trust the Haynes/Clymer manuals to soak up an oil spill. Which bike are you working on the KZ650 or KZ1000? Ed
