Saddleman seat question
21 Aug 2009 19:50
I am looking at getting a saddleman seat for my 81 KZ1000 LTD. Saddleman says that it works for kz1000 j/r. Will this work for my LTD? Are the pans the same shape or similar? I am thinking of just getting the foam and cover and reusing my old seat pan.
Here is the add.
What do you guys think?
www.saddlemen.com/store/index.php?main_p...th=&products_id=6558
Does anyone have this seat or have any idea if it would be comfy or not? I am looking for something for the long haul with me and the wifey and it needs to be comfy to keep her happy.

the j and r models are totally different from the ltd in the way they mount,to the shape. in fact if im not mistaken isn't the ltd seat a two piece unit.

i got a new uninstalled saddleman seat re-cover -cover for a kz900...z-1 900...flat stock seat.....i got it from an e-bay seller who claimed to have a shop and the customer decided he did not like it and hence the e-bay auction...i won it cheap and was bumbed when i opened the mail to find a flimsy fabric inside/vynl? outer...with a draw string and a very tight fit.......it was very hard to stretch over my stock foam and began to tear a little around the under seat edge seams.......that said!!!!!
1) i am no seat repair expert
2) i learned and could do it better than i did and maybe" not tear a new one
3) it does look damn good after all and is so far,sun resistant and shrinking down like it was a brand new seat.....
4) it came with a fabric name tag on the back of the top seam that i trimmed off but it is like a t-shirt tag now and is in the trheads...i would have prefrred no tag to begin with ,,,it was 1x 1 1/2" and black with orange saddleman written on it...kinda weak imo
would i buy one full price.....??????depends on if they have a better material choice and it has a guarentee.....
mine is holding up well but time will tell more........good luck....... p.s standard and ltd model j bikes got different profile seats....

the ltd seat is NOT 2 piece. at least not in 81.
the seat pan is pretty much flat. the foam is just stepped. that is why i wonder, if the foam is being replaced anyway, if my seat pan would work

yeah i don't know ..i got an 81 standard and wonder that stuff too...if they used the same frame and components in 81 and just swapped in dif front and rears and foam..bars ect....i was just relaying my limited "saddleman exp".....i got a local guy i found, that can redo whatever i want and is pretty fair on prices....they say he used to make the flat track harley colored racing ama seats for ricky graham's bikes as well as others....i am gonna try taking the old cover to him and see what he says.......good luck...

im not looking for the seat cover necessarily. my seat cover is good. i am looking for the different shaped seat. the seat cover just goes hand in hand with it. so i guess the question is are all the seat pans the same shape to start with?
my seat isnt all that comfy after about 150 miles. and i think it is less comfy for my wife.

Timebomb is correct...the J/R seat is a 'slide-on' while your seat is hinged on the side. The pans are completely different. Save your money. However, you might be able to buy the foam (size it to fit your frame and pan) and recover the seat ala Saddlemen's. But, as has been mentioned, Saddlemen covers tend to run a bit small and can be troublesome to fit on a pan. I also have a Saddlemen's recover on one of my KZ1000A's and it took two of us to get it on the foam/pan.

ok ya mine is hinged.
does anyone know of any other seat options that would be more comfy? I might have to find someone that can redo my stock seat to be more comfortable.
i might be able to try some kind of add on pad or something.
my wife doesnt want to go on trips unless i get a better seat.

a member from this site ,supercharged i think is his handle, showed a great seat that he had a guy do for him in his local area...the seat was titts,,and his own needs built in.....which got me thinking "hey i bet there are some good upholstery guys around here that may be a good deal and do great work"....
so .... i was at a shop renting a u-hual...they were doing body work on some muscle cars in the next bay and i asked my question....turns out there is great guy and he is a well known motorcycle seat guy and is getting over being ill ,but wants to start doing some work soon...
i bet there are tradesmen around your area that can take a peek at your seat and give a design and good price....try asking at the muscle car shop for who does there work for em...
just a thought that i'm sure you probably thought about already....i kept my old seat cover to take to this gentleman and see if he can use the pattern......good luck
