'80 KZ1000 LTD shock disassembly
07 Aug 2009 07:50
Anyone know how these come apart? I have spring compressors that'll handle the springs but, I can't see under that cap at the top to see how they are held in place. That cap is also the "rebound adjustment".

I saw a thread like that for a 650 shock when I searched but, they appeared to be different from mine.
I compressed the springs quite a bit but, couldn't get the cap to slide down even after disengaging it from the inner ring that guides it through the rebound settings. Maybe I didn't compress them far enough but, I would like to know what's under there before prying and possibly breaking something.

OK. I got the top cap off and the spring. The pic shows a "U" pin that was holding the top cap retainer in place and, once it was removed the cap comes off the top.
If my eyes were a few (many) years younger, I would have seen this sooner.
Under the cap was your basic slotted spring keeper (not pictured).

Re: '80 KZ1000 LTD shock disassembly...another ?

Now that I have it apart this much, does anyone know if I unscrew the top mount with the rebound adjustment gears in it off the shaft, will I be losing some pressure?
Are these gas shocks or just oil type? Does that adjustment have some kind of rod that goes down the shaft to the shock body?

...and here's the compressors I used to squish the springs. They worked real good. Got 'em off e-bay from "sportingforless".
