Would you ever run 2 clip type master links?
13 Jul 2009 20:08
My father cut a chain off his bike and didn't know it actually had a clip type master link. The chain is a new DID630K chain and I wanted to use it, but found out DID doesn't sell a rivet type master link for this particular chain. I can only find clip type master links. So the only way would be to use 2 clip type master links. I don't like clip type links anyway, but 2 of them sounds like double trouble. Anyone ever do this, what are your thoughts? I'll probably just buy another chain, but I hate to discard this one since it's practically brand new (<50 miles).

A master link is only 1/2 of a full link set. To add two master links, you also need the inner link to connect them which does not come with a master link.

OK, I reread it and I think you mean he cut one of the "outer" links which you could replace with a master link.
I don't think using two master links is much different than using one. I've run master link chains for the last 30 years and had no problem.

Good point on the inner link! I will have to check and see if I still have that. If not, looks like it's a no go.

Darn it, he cut the inner link! Oh well, guess I'll be waiting a bit longer before I get my Z1 back on the road.
