Tips on front axle removal? was created by DoubleDub
Trying to replace wheel bearings before putting a lot of miles on this year. I can't seem to get the front axle to come apart yet. Just wondered what tricks were used by the community.

I was going to try this - install the wheel in the frame again but only install one axle clamp. Between the one axle clamp and the disc brake I thought I'd be able to get the axle nut free. Any thoughts?

A good soaking of penetrating oil may help.

Kroil is a good one and so is PB Blaster for frozen parts.

On my 81 650 I've used a breaker bar - mine is simply two pieces of iron pipe connected together: I slip it over the ratchet handle then have at it. One end of the axle has a hole in it, so I stick a big screwdriver in it to keep the axle from spinning. You'd probably have to put a wrench on your axle.

Heat it with a torch and dump cold water on it, that will break any locktite or whatever is holding it. Sometimes people are idiots and use red locktite on their parts and others pay for it later on. In anycase a torch works great for everything from pesky bearings to forkseals, almost as valuable as a big hammer.
