removing gas tank
09 Jul 2009 04:32
Hi everyone. I got a new stator, plugs and wires for my 1982 1000LTD so I want to install them all as well as do the WGCM, so I want to remove my tank for access. I think there is one bolt and some rubber mounts holding the tank on, but my issue is regarding the fuel lines. Is there a Stopcock on the line so I can turn the fuel OFF so it doesn't flow when I am removing the tank? I don't think my petcock has an OFF position.
Thanks
Thanks

If it does not have an off position, then it is triggered by vacume from the carbs. If the rubber is good on the inside of the petcock, gas should only flow in the prime position. However, I have found with my 2 bikes that the more gas that is in the tank, the more the occasional drip...drip will let loose. As far as getting the tank off, on my 650 I just lift up at the rear and pull it out of the grommet holding it down, and on the 1000 there is a rubber strap that that holds it down at the rear. Then I pull back and up.

Thanks, so assuming that the rubber is ok (i don't have any leaks from it normally) I should leave it in the ON position, and disconect the fuel line leading to the carbs right?
Also, is the fuel guage connection just a clip of some sort, or will disconnecting it be more of a pain?

On or reserve, sometimes reserves seems to seal a little better on my bikes. Wish I could bring my self to upgrade the petcocks, but with the latest gasket problems discussed on the forum and the pingel conversion costing 25% of what I paid for the bikes, I'm holding off.

On my 650 it is a 2 pin connector that I disconnected and have never bothered to reconnect. It's just for a light though, I don't have a gauge.
